Guided Experiences

Located in downtown St. John’s, the Blue Charm Angling Company is the ideal place to begin any fly fishing adventure on the Avalon Peninsula. With a fly-fishing season that spans February 1st to October 7th, there is almost always something that you could be doing on the streams, lakes, and rivers in and surrounding the city. Whether you live in the area and want to learn the sport and locales, or you are visiting St. John’s for other reasons and want to schedule some fly-fishing in your free-time, we can customize virtually any sort of outdoor experience for anglers of all abilities, and we will always endeavour to combine beautiful scenery, seclusion, and local history as part of the pursuit.

The Fish

The Avalon Peninsula is home to healthy and diverse populations of wild Brown, Rainbow, and Brook trout and Ouananiche (land-locked salmon). From May 15th to September 7th, multiple different opportunities for trout exist. However, trout angling on the island is a little different than elsewhere, and the Blue Charm guides know the best places, flies, and techniques for success, relaxation, and enjoyment.

Guided trips also include spring forays (February 1st-May 15th) for sea-run Brown trout where there is always the chance that you could connect with one of the larger sea-runs for which Newfoundland is known. Sea-run trips resume in the fall (September 7th-October 7th) as these trout return to spawn during the high autumnal tides. There are also spring and fall runs of beautiful sea-run Brook trout that make for extremely fun angling.

On June 1st, salmon season opens on the island and our guided experiences switch mostly to pursuing Atlantic Salmon. There are several scheduled Salmon rivers within an hour/hour-and-a-half drive from St. John's. The Salmon rivers on the Avalon provide very technical angling with more than decent runs of grilse and multi-sea winter fish eager to take both wet and dry flies. The Salmon season closes on the Avalon Peninsula on September 7th.

Fishing and Foraging

With over 10 years of commercial foraging experience, the Blue Charm can also tailor a guided outing that combines fly-fishing with foraging for greens, wild mushrooms (chanterelles, ceps, hedgehog mushrooms), and berries. Our guests can then create riverside meals from the trout and salmon they have caught and the flora and fungi they have harvested themselves. Especially fun and educational, our Fishing and Foraging trips occur mostly in August and September.

The Blue Charm also offers limited opportunities for eco-angling trips that involve hikes deep into the woods to fish and camp on salmon rivers. These trips require special consultation with the Blue Charm well in-advance of the trip as well as proof/assurance that each guest is able to both hike a fair distance while carrying a weighted backpack and “rough it” in the woods overnight.

Gear and Flies

Please consult with the Blue Charm about gear prior to your excursion as different trips will require different types of rods, lines, and flies. If you aren’t able to travel with all of your gear, we can also rent rods, reels, and waders for nominal fees. Trout flies and salmon flies may be purchased through the shop. When arranging your excursion, we highly suggest that you indicate how many and what types of flies you desire for your trip so that we can make sure they are in-stock when you arrive. We will recommend certain flies based on the season and type of fish pursued, but you may also request any of your favourite patterns which we can custom tie in advance.
